Remaining string you are lucky because once the original circuit is disconnected the new breaker can feed the remaining outlets from that junction box. – Ed Beal Commented Apr 27, 2017 at 21:43
This is most likely a multi wire branch circuit (very common). The neutral is shared in the 12/3. As long as the red and black are on opposite phases, the neutral will only carry the difference in current between the two hots. At this junction box the multi wire branch circuit splits into 2 . When we removed the dryer, I put a 4" square junction box in a lower cabinet, and dead-ended the wire there. I have two 220 volt circuits in my shop with 2 tools on each circuit. Each circuit has a junction box with two DPST open power relays and a 3 position switch (closed/open/closed). I have a band saw and planer on one circuit and a jointer and tablesaw on the other circuit. My living room has a series of two outlets that I would like to convert to split receptacles, with the top half always live and the bottom half controlled by a pair of 3-way switches. . Section 2: Understanding Junction Boxes. Junction boxes are a crucial part of any electrical system. Think of the junction box like a traffic cop. Just as a traffic cop directs cars to go in the right direction to avoid collisions, junction box directs electrical currents to flow safely and smoothly to their destination.
Of course, if you care to modify your interpretation to include the breaker boxes along the way that DO provide the current limiting, "adding breaker boxes and junction boxes to one main line of power" is exactly what your . Well, you can run two totally separate circuits to the box, from two toally separate single-pole breakers. That way if one trips, the other does not. Nothing wrong with that. You can also run a "Multi Wire Branch Circuit" (MWBC) from a two-pole breaker (a fault on either will shut both down) with a single neutral and two hots.

I'm hoping to run 1/2 of it to a new 20A GFCI, with the load side then going down to another 20A receptacle below the new counter (as shown on the photo). The other leg I'd like to run from the GFCI box (i.e., using the GFCI box as a junction, there's plenty of room) to an adjacent room where I also need a new pair of 20A receptacles (a work . so right now with 9x 2.25 The required volume would be 20.25 cubic inches. Note that on your new outlets, since this is a MWBC, you must pigtail the neutrals, rather than using the outlet as a splicing block if you're taking power on further to other outlets.
